Even though you are in this world, your spirit is joined to God forever. You were dead in your sin but now you are alive in Christ. This is your true spiritual identity. In this sermon, I walk you through several passages to help you rest in the power of your union with God.
Colossians 2:11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
While you were dead in your sins, Christ dove into your death when God made him to be sin on the cross. Once Christ became like you, he overcame sin, death, hell, and the grave. He then rose from the dead.
Ephesians 3:12 In Him and through faith in Him we may enter God’s presence with boldness and confidence.
Philippians 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,
Because you are in the presence of God perpetually, and your true home is Heaven, you have all the blessings of your citizenship already in you. God gave you everything he could give you when he placed his spirit in you.
Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms.
God is ever seeking to establish his blessings in your life. Not just so you can be blessed, but so he can use you to be a blessing to the nations of the earth. This is the fulfillment of his original promise to Abraham, to have a family to bless that would be a blessing to the nations of the earth.
Ephesians 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8 that He lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. 9 And He has made known to us the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure, which He purposed in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to bring all things in heaven and on earth together in Christ.
Once you know who you are in Christ, and you know that you are safe in him, there’s work to do. God is busy uniting Heaven and Earth. He is doing this by his own will and purposes, but his church on the Earth is one agent he is accomplishing his will through. It’s important that we live aware of our union with Christ in God so we are sensitive to be used by God as he restores all things.
Ephesians 1:18 I ask that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know the hope of His calling, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and the surpassing greatness of His power to us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of His mighty strength, 20 which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God put everything under His feet and made Him head over everything for the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
The church is his body. Paul calls Christ’s church the fullness of him that fills all in all. He is the one that fills all in all, but we are his fullness. In other words, as Christ comes to completion on the earth, his church will grow to look more and more like him.
Ephesians 2:4 But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved! 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages He might display the surpassing riches of His grace, demonstrated by His kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.
We are God’s handiwork. We are God’s masterpiece. We are the proof that God is righteous, in that he has made us righteous. The fruit of his labor will not fail until his church looks like the head. And once we do, he will continue to show us his mercy and kindness throughout eternity.
Ephesians 2:21 In Him the whole building is fitted together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in Him you too are being built together into a dwelling place for God in His Spirit.
God is building his church. As you meditate on God, allow his identity to bleed over into who you see yourself to be. You are part of God’s plan. To be redeemed by the blood of Christ and built together with billions of other people into a beautiful family.
Colossians 3:1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. NKJV
What a beautiful promise, one you can not improve upon, or work to receive - you can only enjoy. Rest in him.
